President Duterte: No opening of classes without COVID-19 vaccine

President Rodrigo Duterte said that classes will remain suspended in the country until there is no vaccine for COVID-19.

In a televised address aired late Monday night, President Duterte said that he will not risk the lives of students without a vaccine.

“It spells disaster,” President Duterte said.

“I will not allow the opening of classes na magdikit dikit ‘yang mga bata. Bahala nang hindi na makatapos. For this generation walang makatapos na doktor pati engineer,” he added.

“Wala nang aral, laro na lang unless I am sure that they are really safe. It’s useless to be talking about the opening of classes. Para sa akin, bakuna muna,” President Duterte said.

The Department of Education (DepEd) has set the opening of the school year 2020-2021 on August 24.

The Education Department also clarified that the resumption of classes in August did not mean that students will have to go to their schools as distance learning will be implemented.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) also said that universities and colleges capable of “flexible” learning may begin classes in August.

“I think by the grace of God we will have the vaccine before the end of the year so mag-asa na lang tayo sa mga marunong,” President Duterte said.

“They are feverously working on it. ‘Pag nandiyan na yan, ako na ang magsabi labas na,” he added.
