Basic Sight Words in English are the ones that might not be easily sounded out but need to be recognized on sight. These are the commonly used high-frequency words you might encounter very often in reading and writing.
The most commonly used set of sight words is sometimes referred to as Dolch Sight Words because it was developed by an Educator, Dr. Edward William Dolch in the 1930s-40s by studying the most commonly used/occurring words in children’s books of that era. It was said that reading can become much easier once a child knows this list of words.
Knowing these sight words in English can give a beginning reader about half of the words they need to read. Parents or teachers can assist them through different visual reading materials such as flashcards, tarpapel, or printed word lists. Materials can be distributed to each learner to help them familiarize themselves with these words.
Sight words are unique because they often cannot be easily sounded out or decoded phonetically. Instead, children need to recognize them instantly by sight, which boosts reading fluency and comprehension. When learners are confident in identifying these words, they spend less time decoding and more time understanding the meaning of what they read—making reading more enjoyable and less frustrating.
