The ability to write is one of the most essential skills that every child needs to learn. It serves as one of their ammunition in their lives to counter the demands of society. This is the reason why writing is being taught in school. However, parents should not only rely on the school. They themselves should also teach their children in their homes before sending them to any learning institution. Teaching how to write, however, is a challenging task for all parents and teachers. They need to put effort and patience for them to teach the skill. We understand how challenging it is, and that is why we compiled some Handwriting Practice Workbooks/Worksheets that you can use as you teach them how to write.

Handwriting Basics

Experts say that in teaching the basics of handwriting, you should focus one at a time on its three components: Letter Formation, Size, and Spacing

Letter Formation (Form and Slant)

The form and slant of specific letters depend on the style of handwriting being taught. However, children must first learn the starting and stopping point of each letter. This can be accomplished by having children trace the letters with their index fingers before they begin writing. You should also consider the proper posture and paper positions to ensure correct letter formation. Children should sit upright with both feet flat on the floor, placing the paper at a 45-degree angle toward the writing-arm side of the body and tilting it to conform to the position of the writing arm’s forearm.

Size

Letter size or letter proportion should be reasonably consistent across handwriting styles. Similarly-shaped letters should be of the same height. For example, small letters (a, c, e, i, m, n, o, r, s, u, v, w, x, z) should be half the size of ascenders (b, d, h, k, l, t) and descenders (g, j, p, q, y). Capital letters should be about the same height as ascenders. Proper proportions can be taught using handwriting paper with a dotted middle line.

Spacing

Proper spacing includes both spacings between letters and between words. The space between each letter in a word should be the same. The space between each word also should be consistent. You can let the children use their pinky fingers to measure the correct distance between words.

The proper grip of the pen or pencil is also an important aspect of good handwriting. Instruct children to hold the pen or pencil close to the writing tip with the thumb and index fingers. The middle finger should be curved under the writing utensil, with the utensil resting lightly on the area between the tip and first knuckle. The fourth finger and pinky should be curved in toward the palm.
