DepEd to implement the revised curriculum this year – The Department of Education (DepEd) is already set to release its revised curriculum for the school year 2020-2021.

DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan (Undersecretary and Chief of Staff of the Office of the Secretary) said that the new curriculum has been compressed into the most essential learning competencies (MELC) and the will begin the implementation this year. These learning competencies were rephrased and deemed most essential in the achievement of content and performance standards.

According to DepEd, 60% of the MELCs has been removed from the 14,171, leaving 5,689 for the upcoming school year. This is a result of a two-year study that aims to address congestion and overlaps of the K to 12 curricula.

Some DepEd school divisions are now coming up with different solutions to address challenges in the education sector amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental, the TV Eskwela will soon be launched where six hours of airtime from the local channel will be allotted for the DepEd to air lessons.

According to DepEd Kabankalan City Senior Education Program Specialist, Jake Gonzales-Tugbang “Mag-start yan sa June 1, onwards na yan, ang walang TV, puwede makapanood sa barangay, provided they will have the social distancing, provided they will be wearing mask. Meron din kaming ginagawa kasi we have to tap radio programs.”

DepEd is expected to release the minimum health standards to be implemented through the course of the COVID-19 pandemic to include the testing protocol.

“The minimum health standards that DepEd will issue, will include a testing protocol. The draft is presently under review, but this will be issued ASAP. Hopefully early next week, in time for the start of enrollment on June 1.”
